Resetting the Playbook: Mental Fitness for Team Success
As May unfolds, bringing with it Mental Health Awareness Month, I’ve been reflecting on the unexpected parallels between professional sports and workplace well-being.
Growing up, football was more than just a game in our household—it was a shared experience that taught me about teamwork, resilience, and the power of a supportive community.
This past season, the Washington Commanders exemplified those same values. Under new head coach Dan Quinn, the team transformed from a 4–13 record in 2023 to a remarkable 12–5 in 2024, culminating in an NFC Championship appearance—their first since 1991. Hogs Haven
Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels played a pivotal role, earning Offensive Rookie of the Year honors and setting an NFL record for most rushing yards by a rookie quarterback in a season. NBC Sports.
But what stood out wasn’t just their on-field success—it was the intentional culture shift within the organization. Quinn emphasized team-building and mental preparedness, creating an environment where players supported one another, learned from setbacks, and celebrated collective growth.
The Workplace Parallel
Just as the Commanders invested in their team’s mental resilience, organizations can benefit from prioritizing mental health and fostering strong, connected teams.
Here are three ways to bring those lessons to your workplace:
- Implement Mindfulness Programs
Equip your team with tools to manage stress, enhance focus, and build emotional agility. Group practices foster trust and shared understanding. - Encourage Regular Breaks
Short, mindful pauses throughout the day aren’t downtime—they’re fuel. They help reset attention, reduce burnout, and model sustainable performance. - Foster a Supportive Culture
Create space for open dialogue about mental health. Encourage vulnerability, active listening, and a shared commitment to well-being.
Resilience Is a Team Sport
The Commanders’ season reminds us that resilience isn’t just individual grit—it’s a collective practice, rooted in connection, culture, and care.
